Netflix has announced that the critically acclaimed and beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender has been picked up. This reboot will be a live action TV series
Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the story of a world divided into 4 nations of elemental benders. The citizens of the nation’s possess either: air-bending, fire-bending, earth-bending, or water-bending. The powerful fire nation seeks to dominate the rest of the world through destruction and domination. It is up to a boy named Aang, the last airbender to help end the war the fire nation has started and save the world. Aang is also the Avatar, capable of bending all 4 earth elements
It has also been announced that the original co-creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko will be a part of the show as well. They have also stated that the start characters will be people of color! The even put out an statement about their feelings on the new show below:
This is well received news as the last live adaption of Avatar did not go over so well.
The decision to white wash the main characters in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 The Last Airbender was met with a storm of controversy and rightly so. Now almost a decade later, everyone is taking steps to make sure that this does not happen again
When it doubt, always bet on Netflix. Netflix has been instrumental in the development of diverse and underrepresented communities in tv. And they show no signs of slowing down.
