Attention all sci-fi nerds, we have a new superhero in town and she’s a black girl!
BLIGHT is the latest project from filmmaker, Brittany Clemons, known as an associate producer for the PBS documentary The Talk: Race in America and PBS series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
The 15 minute short film will follow Charmaine (Belle Le Grand) as she grieves the loss of her older brother in a racially charged, officer-involved shooting. With supernatural abilities acquired through a contaminated water supply, she seeks vengeance on the officer who killed him.
In addition to a storyline that features a woman of color, BLIGHT is also led by a crew consisting predominantly of women. Score! As a vehicle for social commentary with magical realism, BLIGHT will explore the aftermath of police brutality and environmental racism through a sci-fi lens, but the film could use your help!
The Kickstarter campaign for BLIGHT launched last month and has reached 77% of its funding. Kickstarter wraps this Saturday, December 15th and every little bit counts! There’s no telling where this project could go in the future as Clemons hopes to pursue a feature or TV series adaptation! Let’s help this gem finish strong so that we can add another strong woman of color into the realm of science-fiction and storytelling in general.
The film has already been casted with locations set. All funding will go to securing equipment, permits, additional crew members, and visual effects.
