Entertainment Weekly released their first look of Guy Ritchie’s ‘Aladdin’ remake today and it’s the first thing we’ve seen since the film’s teaser release back in October of this year.
I must not be a Disney snob. I must not be a Disney snob…
First things first…
Will Smith WILL be blue. This has been confirmed by the man himself. What you see in the photos is Genie chillin’ in his human form. What’s cool about the photos is that you can already see the ‘Fresh Prince’ swagger Smith brings to this whole new world (you know I had to do it). He knows how large a task this is in light of Robin Williams’ larger than life performance, so why not bring his own colorful personality into the mix? I can dig it (and the top-knot).
The project has received its fair share of criticism in casting biracial actress, Naomi Scott and while I can certainly understand the desire to see a dark brown, curvy young woman representing the princess, I’m happy to embrace the poise and strength Scott will undoubtedly bring to the character. Girl is talented and I’m hopeful her storyline will only bring more depth and fondness to her legacy.
Aside from Aladdin (Mena Massoud) looking like a polished prep nerd on his first day of school and the seemingly washed out tones altogether, the costumes look almost amazing? My man, Jafar, looks like he’s on his way to a Halloween party more than a series of meetings to plot and take over the universe, but it’s cool. The movie’s going to be great, right? Right?!
Am I jumping out of my seat with joy because of these photos? More of a shy lean. There’s still potential here, Disney. Don’t break my heart.
