Reflecting back on 2018 we can honestly say that it was a great year for video games. While many games debuted, these are the 5 that left a mark.
5. Dead Cells – Available on all platforms
A 2D side scroller that has the feel of Metroid and Castlevania games. You play a entity that inhabits a body in a prison and you have to fight your way through the different levels. You have to get as far as you can until you beat the final boss or you die, and if you die you start back at the beginning of the first level. It’s a enjoyable fast paced game that you can put a good amount of hours into, however it isn’t for the faint of heart. It pulls no punches on the difficulty so you have to learn and adapt quickly.
4. Marvel’s Spider-Man – Available on PS4
It’s been a pretty good year for superhero’s, especially your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, this game is one of the reasons why. I never thought there would be a game that would surpass the old Spider-Man 2 game, but here we are. While it seemed to be heavily influenced by the Batman Arkham games, it has its own flair. This is achieved by the story and world it puts Peter Parker in.
3. Monster Hunter World – Available on PS4, Xbox, & PC
The Monster Hunter series by Capcom, in my opinion, has never really catered to the casual gamer and more to the hardcore fan base of the series. This addition to the series however has opened up its doors to welcome anyone and everyone, it’s quite the experience. There is no shortage of things to do since Capcom has been adding new content, for free, consistently. With the level of grind this game has, it’ll keep you busy for a long time to come.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2 – Available on PS4 & Xbox
When announced only one phrase came to mind, about time. This sequel has been a long time coming to fans of Rockstar Games and fans of the first game. It did not disappoint, you get thrown into the Wild West and are basically told to do whatever you want. The roughly 60 hour long story is great along with the gameplay. This is a game that wont hold your hand though, so you’ll have to explore and that is what makes this game stand out even more. You’re in control of what you experience, the world is yours.
1. God of War – Available on PS4
With most games being a multiplayer experience there’s a slim number of single player games that came out. God of War was one of the few in 2018 and it leads the pack. Being a reboot to the series it brings new designs, a new story, and a lot of action. This was truly the standout game of the year, it’s a phenomenal experience and will be worth the time you put into it.
