Introducing Nai BR.XX: The Voice Behind New Black Female-Led Anime “Carole & Tuesday”

Urban Anime Lounge had the pleasure of interviewing Nai Br.XX, one of the amazing singing voices behind the new Black female-led anime, Carole & Tuesday.

We got to know more about the singer-cum-voice actor, her passion for music, and what led to this project!

UAL: Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? Any fun facts that you’d like us to know?

Nai Br.XX: My name is Nai Br.XX. I am a singer from Far Rockaway, Queens New York  by way of Atlanta, GA. I have been professionally singing for about 5 years now, and I love every minute of it.

UAL: What is the significance behind Br.XX?

Nai Br.XX: It’s a combination of my first and last name Briana Maddix

UAL: What got you into music? When did your journey begin?

Nai Br.XX: I’ve been singing my entire life, but it wasn’t until college that I saw music as a career path. One of my friends, the incredibly talented songwriter/producer Sensei Bueno, heard me sing and wanted to make music with me. We connected with this amazing writer Honey Simone at school and made the album, Wasted Callaway. It was received well, so just kept making music.

UAL: How would you describe your music?

Nai Br.XX: I think the best word to describe music is experimental, all of my songs are diverse but at the same time cohesive to me. I personally have never heard any music like mine, and I love developing and planning with my sound.

UAL: Who are your biggest musical influences/favorite artists?

Nai Br.XX: I come from a Jamaican home so I grew up on Gregory Isaacs, Sanchez and Beres Hammond, but I am inspired by a variety of different artists. Some of my favorite artists right now are NAO and BANKS.

UAL: What inspires your music?

Nai Br.XX: I find inspiration in almost anything when it comes to music, its what ever evokes feeling to me. Colors, conversations, but what inspires me most are sounds because once I hear a synth that strikes I can fall into full on writing.

UAL: What is your writing process like?

Nai Br.XX: Mainly free-styling a melody into lyrics, until I can get an actual structure in the song.

UAL: What are you most proud of?

Nai Br.XX: The growth I have made in terms of writing in comparison to when I first started. And I’m super excited for everyone to see the evolution once I let out my new music.

UAL: What is your favorite song you’ve recorded so far?

Nai Br.XX: Recordings never been my favorite thing, but if I had to choose it would be Daydream.

UAL: What has been the most challenging part of your journey as an aspiring artist?

Nai Br.XX: I think every independent artist struggles with wanting their work to be seen and heard, so finding ways to expand my brand has been a little difficult. But I’m confident that the songs I have already released, along with the new music in the vault, that I can break that barrier and get my music shared on a larger scale.

UAL: What projects are you currently working on?

Nai Br.XX: I’m currently working on a couple of singles, but more importantly a new project!

UAL: Where can we listen to more of your music?

Nai Br.XX: All streaming platforms – Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, SoundCloud and YouTube.

UAL: We’re super excited that you’re working on Carole & Tuesday. How did you get involved with this project?

Nai Br.XX: There was a global open call for singers-actors for Carole & Tuesday. And it kind of fell in my lap thanks to my friends over at Sweet Soul Records in Japan. They were the driving force that pushed my music in the hands of some important people. Because of them, I was chosen!

UAL: Do you feel a connection to the character, Carole?

Nai Br.XX: Yes, I was actually surprised to see a resemblance between Carole and I! We both have natural hair and are of color. I am so honored to be able to represent people of color, especially, in the anime community.

UAL: What was the recording experience like?

Nai Br.XX: Pretty awesome, everyone was super kind! Celeina Ann, who sings for Tuesday, records with me and makes me feel super comfortable. I’m glad to be surrounded by such a warm crew.

UAL: What has your overall experience been like working internationally, and, on an anime project? Were there any challenges?

Nai Br.XX: It was the first time I’ve been outside the country, so I was pretty nervous. But the whole experience had been pretty amazing. I think the only challenge I really had was the difficulty adjusting to a drastic time change.

UAL: Did you meet any of the voice actor or actresses of the anime?

Nai Br.XX: Yes, they are so sweet!

UAL: Do you anticipate working on any other international projects?

Nai Br.XX: I am always open to any opportunity to work. As of right now, nothing is in the works, but you never know what the future has in store.

UAL: Do you have a personal love of anime/manga? If so, what is your favorite series?

Nai Br.XX: I’ve always love the aesthetic of anime; however, it’s not something I watch all the time. When I was growing up because my brothers watched shows like Yu-Gi-Oh,  Pokémon, and Dragon Ball Z. I started watching it along with them. My favorite was Pokémon, we used to battle with the cards and everything!

UAL: If you weren’t into anime already, would this experience make you consider getting into it?

Nai Br.XX: Yes, after this experience I got some recommendations of really good ones and on my off time I’ve been trying to get into them one by one. Not to mention, a lot of my friends are into anime so they continue to show me new shows and are super excited to see Carole & Tuesday.

UAL: Where do you see your career going after working on this project?

Nai Br.XX: I don’t really have any expectations, I am just incredibly humbled by the experience and look forward to continuing to work with these amazingly talent people.

UAL: What is your biggest goal as a musician?

Nai Br.XX: A couple of Grammy’s under my belt, a worldwide tour, and to share love and connection around the world.

UAL: What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Nai Br.XX: JUST DO! A lot of times we hold ourselves back from greatness because of fear. When you can let go of that fear and just do, you can really live.

UAL: And lastly, what can we expect to see from you in the future?

Nai Br.XX: More music, more videos and season 2 of Carole & Tuesday!
