“Is it just me…or is it getting crazier out there?”
It’s official! The Joker teaser has officially dropped, and after months of speculation and critique of how Joaquin Phoenix—the newest actor undertaking the iconic role—will reinvent Joker, things seem to be taking a turn for the sinister in this latest iteration of the Dark Knight’s greatest nemesis.
In this teaser trailer, audiences are given intense and poignant glimpses of what appears to be the psychological breakdown of a man named Arthur Fleck, who lives by his mother’s mantra to “smile, and put on a happy face”. That is, until life continues to deal him a swift and painful hand that erodes his optimistic outlook to become something much more…twisted.
The deterioration of Arthur’s sanity is evocatively scored by Jimmy Durante’s version of “Smile”, illustrating the helplessness Arthur embodies in his determination to “smile” in spite of the circumstances, until it seems in the end that perhaps—even though it may look it—Arthur’s no longer smiling at all.
‘Joker’ is directed by Todd Philips, known for comedies such as “The Hangover” trilogy. Also included in the impressive cast are Robert De Niro, Francis Conroy, and “Atlanta” favorites Zazie Beetz and Brian Tyrese Henry.
Joker will be out in theaters everywhere October 4th, 2019
