Ok, so you’ve made it to Thailand.
Now, I don’t know if it’s your first time or your 30th,
But you’re here
And ready to go
If you’re anything like me, you’ve come with no expectations
To run into adventure and meet like-minded souls like you!
And I think I have just the places:
I spent the majority of my time in Chiang Mai, in the northern part of Thailand. But, I also moved between Udon Thani* (northern region) and Bangkok** (southern region). If you want to be in walking distance to everything that a Westerner could want in Chiang Mai, you want to stay near Nimmanhaemin Road.
If you would like more traditional surroundings, be sure to find a place outside of the city center, maybe in Old Town or just far, far away from the shining beacon of consumerism, Maya Mall. You will know it when you see it, friend. My favorite place to stay is The 51 Hometel, but if you real fancy, I also love Hyde Park Chiang Mai.
Stay in Udon Thani if you want a rural, more traditional Thai lifestyle.
Stay in Bangkok if you want to live with no inhibitions.
Where To Eat If You’ve Got A Millennial Diet
Farm to table food. The stuff of Portlandia hipster dreams- with gluten free options!
Colorful, Indian place with tons of vegan and vegetarian options.
Mexican food with full vegan menu options.
Vegan and CLASSY.
Big portions and vegan options.
Gluten and vegan free food when you’re sick of eating traditional Thai breakfast.
Late-night option when you’re missing the West and you want a good veggie burger, damn it.
Vegan, vegetarian cafe that gives you strong espresso and good wifi.
Where To Nerd and Geek Out The Right Way
It’s nothing to see the bloods, brains, and guts of your fellow humans encased in glass.
When you’re doing late night research and you found your groove- this place is 24 hours.
This is the book store of Matilda’s dreams. Books on books and books- and if you return them, when you’re done, you get 50% back.
An augmented reality museum that lets you play with optical illusions and 3D video opps.
It’s like you’re on a rollercoaster, but still eating popcorn watching your favorite movie. Not a good move if you’re trying to lean in for a kiss, though.
Where To Get A Little Taste Of Adventure
Chris is the bomb and he has vegan ink. I’m in love with the ink I got from him.
Yo- Muay Thai fights get wild. Make sure you bring money if you want to get it on the betting opps. But, you didn’t hear that from me.
I ate three scorpions on this road. Just saying.
I’m an aerialist, so this gave me a good place to practice my form while I was away from home. If you’ve never tried, but want to- this is the spot for you!!
Where To Let Your Free Spirit Fly
Take a long boat into the middle of the lake and you will literally get lost in floating flowers.
This is seasonal- happens in February. But, if you’re lucky enough to be around- you can spend 10 days of hippie bliss in the mountains, getting high. Off life, of course.
Bathe and feed the elephants. And stand in their poop while doing it. I’m telling you because no one told me.
If you’re into crystals, I found some beautiful pieces of amethyst and selenite here. The owner is really informed about his crystal selection, but also go in with an open mind, and see what draws you.
Where To Find Other Black People
If you’re in Chiang Mai, a group of amazing Black people meet at a different restaurant around the city every week. You can always meet someone new, exciting, and quirky here. Promise.
I think the title is self- explanatory, no? But, this is the Facebook group you want to join if you want to know about events to go to that Black people are hosting or attending together, mostly in Chiang Mai.
Different Facebook group from above, same concept. EXCEPT that these events are primarily in Bangkok.
If I missed anything, add your 2 cents in the comments! And, if you want to see what else I’m up to in Thailand, follow @waitfortheq for updates!

What's Your Reaction?
Call me Q. I read books way more than I talk to people- I'm working on it. I love cartoons and practicing my twerk face (with the tongue out!) in the bathroom mirror. I write a lot about humans and our connection to Other, but I also stuff my face with Kit Kats and Lays and NEVER go to the gym, so who says I'm an expert on anything? And, hey, I treat my Instagram like Snapchat, but you can still follow me there @waitfortheq.
