As an alternative girl in a straight -forward world, when looking for help and advice over the years, most of the answers have always been to pray; however, while I would never ever knock anyone’s commitment to praying through character building times, it just didn’t seem like the only way for self-care.
Years have gone by and I noticed that post-college, post-baby, post-quarter life crisis, I have found so many other ways to keep a clear mind and make sure that my energy stays exactly where I need it. Don’t get me wrong, I do pray, but that is not the only thing I do for personal clarity. Some days I like to connect with nature. I also like to stay in and clean my living spaces. Other days, I like to go to my favorite crystal shop and find new gems to center myself with.
Then, there are my writing days, where I escape in the pages of my journals, and resurface hours later feeling light as a bird. When it’s time to be an extrovert I find my friends and explore the town, finding happy hour; sometimes taking an impromptu trip out of town. Lately, my inner peace has come from binge watching shows, or discovering a new anime that already has all their episodes posted. And you already know that on Sunday’s, we listen to Solange.
I say all of this to say that self-care comes in so many different forms. The only thing on the rubric for self-care is to take care of self. You cannot allow other people who aren’t as worldly to create a plan of clarity for you by simply recommending or engaging you in prayer or their personal rituals. In the words of Rae Sremmurd, “Getchu somebody that can do both!” We do not owe anyone an explanation when it comes to how we regroup. We don’t owe anyone an explanation for anything. Beautiful, right?
Self-care is important because it is a preventative action. Instead of waiting for the unexpected stress, or tiredness to happen, practicing self-care in your own way allows you to keep these things from happening. When was the last time you actually asked yourself how you were doing? If you have to think about it then this is exactly why you should be creating your own self-care rituals. You deserve the best version of you.
What are some ways that you practice self-care?
